Student Motivation

Learnosity Voice: Learning

Learnosity Voice ignites a sense of empowerment and fun into the learning process leading to greater motivation amongst students and ultimately improved language skills.

We have seen evidence of improved student motivation consistently throughout our client projects.

The NCCA FÓN project gave us an interesting insight into how using Learnosity Voice can change student attitudes to a previously unpopular subject.  Teachers reported before the project that 14% of students really enjoy learning Irish, 36% enjoy learning Irish and 43% think Irish is ok.  After the project the teachers changed this measure to 13% really enjoy learning Irish and 88% enjoy learning Irish.

All of the teachers involved in FÓN stated that their classes were more motivated to learn Irish as a result of using Learnosity Voice.  A large proportion of the students themselves, 88%, reported that they had enjoyed using Learnosity Voice for learning and practising Irish.  So popular was Learnosity Voice that 72% of students would have liked to continue using it and 94% would recommend the system to other students.

What the teachers say:

Teachers often remark on how their students become really motivated and engaged when using Learnosity Voice.  They enjoy using their phone, ipod or Skype to do homework and assessments as it is an effective and relevant way for them to learn.

"Students phoned the system after school and early in the morning.  They even used their own phones after the project ended. This was a telling sign that the project genuinely engaged them."
“I could see from the very first lesson that it is very, very engaging and a lot of fun. The amount of laughter that is occurring tells me that they're interested and involved.”

Justine Bomm, Teacher in charge of Enrichment and Learning, Ipswich Girls Grammar School, Australia.

“Great to see the enthusiasm.  They are very enthusiastic about the project.  Every night the majority of them are doing one or two sessions.”
“Conversation skills improved, group work was more cohesive and peer teaching was more meaningful. There was greater purpose to learning language."
“Students were very interested and excited to use the mobile phones in class.  They were interested [which] was evident by their use of the phones at home.  They wanted to use the phones and listen to other people’s answers in every class.”

What the students say:

“The MALL project was a really inivative (sic) way to practise our Indonesian skills because it is a way to incorporate something we do all the time, like talking on the phone and practising your Indonesian skills all at once. I loved using the phones and I would definitely love to use the phones again!”
“The phone is a brilliant way of learning. It is definitely a more interesting way to learn.”
“I liked that we got to practise our aural and oral Irish as well as our written.  It was also more fun that class work. I really enjoyed it.”
“I liked the whole ideas of using the mobile phone as it is something that young people can relate to and enjoy.  Also it is easy to use.  I did not dislike anything at all about the project.”
“It would be like winning the lottery :-), it is difficult to practise only with a few face to face tutorials here and there, it would complement the lack of opportunity to practise oral skills (…) ...you got my vote:-).”
