Client: NSW Board of Studies
The Board of Studies NSW serves government and non-government schools in the development of school education for Years K-12. It provides educational leadership by developing quality curriculum and awarding secondary school credentials, the School Certificate and the Higher School Certificate.
The Board of Studies, is renowned as one of the leaders in e-assessment. Learnosity have assisted the Board in achieving its goals in this field since 2002.
High stakes Online Assessment
The Board of Studies NSW has a policy of actively exploring many areas of e-assessment. For some years we have been involved with, and continue to participate in many technological and operational aspects of online testing for the Board of Studies.
In November 2006, following years of trials, nearly 60,000 students sat for an online test over three days. This mandatory high stakes test has been run successfully each year since 2006. The Board is currently piloting online examinations that include essay answers, such as Geography, History and English.
We have considerable experience in student authentication, high-speed delivery, and secure results collection.
Special Provisions and Accessibility
The Board of Studies NSW has a policy of full access and equity in online test development, ensuring that online testing systems are able to be used by students with a wide range of disabilities.
Learnosity has extensive experience in developing accessible systems through their work with the Board that are completely accessible to students with a wide range of disabilities and special needs. These include the provision of size-modifiable texts/images, pause-test buttons, individually set extra time provisions, pre-recorded audio questions and keyboard-based navigation for students with mobility issues.
Online “Test Yourself” Website
As a part of of the Board's e-assessment program, practice testing systems for students were required.
In 2006, we assisted in the Board's delivery of an online practice test used by thousands of students in a classroom environment. A broader project enabled highly efficient delivery of multiple choice questions with graphic reference content, in 34 subjects to both a home and a classroom environment.
The project proved a phenomenal success with a total of over 8 million tests taken online since its launch. For the last number of years, one million online tests are done in the 4-8 week run up to the students written examinations. This includes up to 110,000 in one day - more than 120 tests per minute, every minute, for eight hours.
The things we learned from working on this system enable us to confidently advise on delivering massive numbers of online tests in a risk-managed and controlled manner.
Online Delivery of Examination Results
For over a decade, each year the Board has delivered exam results online to more than 65,000 students. The success of this system, which comes under enormous public and political scrutiny, is a core business objective for the Board of Studies.
Learnosity has taken an active role in providing improved confidence in this system.
Since 2005 we have developed important modifications and refinements enabling it to deliver faster, with improved contemporary security features, and with better dashboard reporting facilities.
